Antimony's Importance: Supply Crunch Sparks Soaring Prices and Market Opportunities
Market Outlook: The combination of declining supply, strong demand growth—particularly from the solar PV sector—and geopolitical tensions is expected to sustain high antimony prices over the next 3-4 years. The relatively inelastic supply, depleted strategic stockpiles and China's export restrictions contribute to a persistent high-price environment. This scenario underscores the need for diversified and reliable supply sources to meet the growing demand for antimony in various critical applications.
Antimony's Strategic Importance: Antimony is a critical mineral with unique properties, including poor conductivity of heat and electricity and the ability to impart strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance to alloys. It is essential in various applications such as flame retardants, photovoltaic cells, wind turbines, liquid metal batteries, defense munitions, semiconductors and circuit boards. Notably, each solar panel contains approximately 40 grams of antimony and with 400 GW of solar PV installed in 2023, this accounted for about 60% of that year's mine production.
Supply Constraints: Global antimony supply is limited and geographically concentrated. In 2023, primary mine supply was 103,000 tonnes, with China, Russia, and Tajikistan collectively accounting for 83% of production and 55% of resources. China's mine production decreased from 110,000 tonnes in 2015 to 40,000 tonnes in 2023 due to depletion of higher-grade resources and stricter environmental controls. Additionally, China's recent export restrictions on antimony products, including an outright ban to the U.S., have further tightened global supply.
